Employment with VISIONS

Summer Program Leaders
VISIONS typically employs teachers, graduate students and Ph.D. candidates, returned Peace Corps volunteers, experiential outdoor educators and professionally minded, hard-working intentional adventurers. We seek individuals who have experience leading or teaching teenagers, who have lived and traveled in other countries and/or cultures, who are enthusiastic about our mission and want to work with teenagers in a residential setting.
A VISIONS leader must be a team player first and foremost. The demands of the job make flexibility and a sense of humor indispensable. Each program has four to six staff, including the program director who is usually a veteran of at least one full summer program. Staffers work 6-day weeks with a full day and night off per week.
Depending on the season, the VISIONS staff return rate is 43% to 55%. Average age is mid- to late 20s. You MUST BE AT LEAST 23 years old and earn minimum Basic First Aid and CPR certifications for your time of employment with VISIONS. Some sites require Wilderness First Aid. Other, more advanced safety certifications, carpentry or masonry skills, experience living in different cultures are not essential but are pluses in considering applicants' qualifications. Spanish- and French-language sites require solid, above average conversational skills.
Employment contracts are for 6 or 7, or, in a few program locations, 10-week sessions that end approximately the third week of August. Regardless, employment for all staff starts mid-June with three days of basic training at VISIONS headquarters. Staff teams then fly to their program sites where they continue orientation and preparations for 8 to 10 days before our teen volunteers arrive for their summer community service programs.
