Born and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma, Andrew Wingfield began seeking opportunities to explore the world outside of his land-locked home state as a teenager. After only a handful of experiences in Europe and Central America, he knew he hadn’t begun to scratch the surface of a vast and diverse world and was sure that he must see more.
Andrew earned a B.A. in international relations, Spanish and French.from William Jewell College near Kansas City, MO. He spent both semesters of his junior year studying abroad, first in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and later in Nantes, France. While overseas Andrew experienced first-hand the rich rewards of living, studying, and volunteering in another culture and language and has pursued actively international opportunities since college graduation. He lived in Seville, Spain, where he taught English in a variety of settings, including a Spanish grade school, high school, and private language academy for adults. He is currently pursing a Master’s degree in international education policy and management at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.
Andrew has spent three consecutive summers staffing VISIONS programs, including two sessions in the British Virgin Islands, a season in Guadeloupe and last summer in Ecuador. He is extremely excited to return to Tortola as the 2010 program director and to reconnect with the magical culture and island that so captivated him three years ago. Andrew loves VISIONS because it provides participants such a rich experience in service learning, cross-cultural communication and community building. It is an experience, Andrew says, teeming with the making of significant memories.
