VISIONS
Adam Schersten - Dominica Program Director
Gretchen Bade

While growing up in rural Vermont Adam camped, hiked, mountain biked and ski raced. After graduating high school he set off for Grand Cayman to pursue a fascination with the underwater world by studying SCUBA. This trip also sparked a curiosity about cultures outside the U.S. and a desire to travel. After a few months in Grand Cayman, Adam returned to the States and to college at South Eastern North Carolina where he earned a degree in Marine Technology. Throughout his college years, travel was a priority that led to Peru for an ecological study of the neo-tropics, to the Caribbean for more diving, and to Western Europe for a Eurail trek.

Adam financed college by working on the docks of a local marina where he detailed boats and eventually landed a job as the first mate and dive master of the "Hawksbill", the largest dive boat in NC. After accumulating more diving and boating experience, Adam earned a USCG Captain's license and took a position in South Florida as a Captain for a coastal engineering firm; he conducted erosion assessments and assisted in coral reef monitoring and geophysical investigations.

With all his eclectic experience came reflection and the recognition that good role-modelling and education were fundamental to Adam's successes. With a brother 11 years younger still at home, Adam decided to move back to Vermont to be closer to his sibling. He was a Teachers assistant, volunteered in a local teen center and heard about VISIONS - a perfect fit with his interests in other cultures, education and inspiring /empowering youth. Adam staffed two programs last summer on Tortola, B.V.I. and considers it "the most rewarding experience of my life yet." This spring Adam is stationed on the island of Roatan off the north coast of Honduras working as a PADI dive instructor. Come summer he is ready for the challenges and adventures in Dominica.
