To be effective stewards of our own communities and of the world community, we must participate in community life wherever we live. We can only truly begin to understand others by sharing in their lives and listening to their perspectives, perspectives that may differ dramatically from our own. At the same time, we may be surprised to discover what we have in common with people whose lives are so different. Service, without expecting recognition or reward, brings a deeper understanding of the human community and of oneself as well. It is fundamental to a healthy community, no matter the size.
The service in a VISIONS program engages you at least 55% of the time. The work is ambitious. We follow a community’s lead on the projects undertaken, which we plan in consultation and collaboration with local governments, community sectors, NGO's and individuals. The work includes both construction and non-construction. We do construction because it is often a pressing need in our host communities and because it also teaches many valuable things: technical and problem-solving skills, efficient work habits, teamwork, and self-confidence, to name a few.
The length of the workday depends on cultural traditions, the weather and climate, and on other planned activities. Rarely does everyone work simultaneously on a single project. Usually, we break into small teams so that you can choose daily where you go and what you do.
The work we do has the added benefit of serving as our thank you gift to the host communities who welcome us into their lives.
