VISIONS PASSAGE Programs for Middle School

The Passage programs, in either the British Virgin Islands or Montana, have the same components and basic framework as VISIONS programs for teens: service, cross-cultural learning and adventurous exploration in a supportive, inter-dependent small group setting. Participants will be fully engaged and appropriately challenged, members of a family-like team that lives and works together to achieve shared goals. Both Passage programs aim to give participants a wider perspective, increased self-confidence, greater self-awareness and respect for others, rewards that will help pave the way for the high school years just around the corner.

Island Passage
Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
JULY 7 - 27       $3,800

Virgin Gorda is a small, quiet, closely knit island community. Our home base is St. Mary's School, long familiar to VISIONS. The roomy space sits atop a hill on the north coast, and boasts the best breezes on Virgin Gorda. From our back door we can see the ocean below and hear the waves. Projects will include renovating a few playgrounds, constructing playground equipment for the Little Rainbow preschool in Bregado Flax and a few dog houses for the humane society. We’ll assist Virgin Islands Search and Rescue in simple swimming lessons for children, visit the elders’ home nearby, do small projects for the BVI National Parks, and most likely a few odds-and-ends repairs at St. Mary's.

Excursions will include a boat trip to neighboring Anegada, an even more remote island and coral atoll where pink flamingoes forage the salt water ponds. We will hike, snorkel, enjoy mini-golfing, always the exquisite beaches, ferry to the main island of Tortola to shop and see the sights, and spend an evening watching the Mokko Jumbies (stilt walkers) perform. We’ll meet and mingle with many island friends, enjoy dancing and listening to steel drums, and learn about British Virgin Islands culture up close, every day.  To see photos from VISIONS British Virgin Islands, go to British Virgin Islands (in Program Locations) and click on Photo Gallery.

Northwest Passage
Northern Cheyenne Reservation, Montana
JULY 7 - 27       $3,550

The Northern Cheyenne Reservation in southeast Montana has been home to VISIONS groups off and on since 1992. We will live together in the Head Start or another community building in either Lame Deer, the central town on the reservation, or 20 minutes away in Birney Village, a tiny enclave of 50 families on the Tongue River. Service projects could include renovating playgrounds, building handicapped ramps or making repairs to elders homes, organizing an activities day with Cheyenne Children Services or making picnic tables for public spaces, to name a few.

Excursions will include overnight backpacking, hiking, and trips to the Medicine Wheel in the Big Horn Mountains and the Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument, site of Custer's Last Stand. We'll try to get a glimpse of the tribe's buffalo herd that summers in the mountains. We will certainly attend the Lame Deer pow wow, learn traditional beadwork from Florence Running Wolf, share a sweat lodge with her husband, Mike, and discover Cheyenne culture from our Cheyenne friends. We guarantee a trip into Billings, Montana's largest city, for a movie, bowling or the batting cages, shopping and a stroll through the Saturday outdoor Farmers Market.  To see photos from VISIONS Montana, go to Montana (in Program Locations) and click on Photo Gallery.

"I saw your post on Facebook and thought I'd drop a note to say how much I loved my three weeks with VISIONS, what an impact it had on me when I was 12. We had great counselors who helped us have a tremendous summer. This experience allowed me to take pride in the work...I never had worked that hard in my life! There was definitely something rewarding in the manual labor and the appreciation for the finished playground. The cultural experiences were what made that summer so unique. I was just starting to question my world and my place in it and the opportunity to experience a beautiful, engaging culture helped me focus my goals and dreams."
