Is International Community Service Abroad Right for You?

There are several trusted organizations offering international community service abroad for teens.  Deciding which one is right for you or your teen can be difficult, especially when all of them describe interesting community service projects and cultural enrichment. The key is to look beyond the exciting aspects of the trip and focus on the details. VISIONS Service Adventures has key elements that set it apart from any other program offering teen summer community service. The VISIONS framework has been in place for over two decades and the elements have long proved successful.

VISIONS focuses solely on high school and middle school aged students. Since 1989 we have worked with youth aged 14 through 18 and have developed solid programs that respond to teens' and early teens' unique needs. We have earned our expertise in working with teens by carefully planning community service projects around the globe that genuinely challenge and reward this age range and by crafting well rounded experiences that tap into the best potential of each participant.

National and international community service abroad is about people. Our participants work closely with community members. They contribute directly to improving the lives of the people in some way. The focus of VISIONS Service Adventures' service is on improving and assisting the human condition in a variety of concrete ways.

Cultural immersion is a cornerstone of every VISIONS teen summer program.  We live in the heart of the host community. We work alongside members of the community, dine with them, relax with them, exchange stories and go on excursions with them.  We don’t simply pass through their lives; we become a part of their lives for the month or so we spend in the community. Our cooks and drivers are local people, most of whom have worked with us for years, and we enlist maestros to teach us technical skills and help guide us in construction projects. Our leaders in language immersion programs are fluent speakers who encourage participants in a variety of ways to use and improve their language skills

VISIONS Service Adventures takes very seriously the safety of each of our students. Our leaders are minimum First Aid / CPR certified, and most hold advanced, additional certifications. Safety protocols are reviewed and practiced on site before participants arrive. A primary consideration in planning excursions involving international community service abroad is finding the balance between cultural immersion and safety. One way we believe we achieve this balance is by foregoing a common practice of home stays. While some global service travel organizations may break up travel groups in order to place students into separate homes, we prefer group housing, typically in a school, hostel, or community center in the heart of the host community, surrounded by local people

Finally, VISIONS offers one of the lowest student-to-leader ratios available in a teen summer service program.  We employ one adult leader for every four or five students, ensuring that there is always an experienced leader to turn to in any situation and several adults to handle any emergency.
