Community service is the linchpin of every VISIONS program. We spend 55% - 60% of the program engaging in service. Service projects are designated by the community; local ngo's and governments identify needs and wishes within their communities. VISIONS responds to the community's lead on the projects we undertake. All VISIONS programs undertake a major construction project or several smaller construction initiatives. Additionally, each program offers other types of service work—volunteering with children or elders, agricultural or environmental work, internships with artisans and farmers, and more. Each day, participants choose which work site from a number of projects. Depending on the program, these may include:

• carpentry, masonry, adobe construction
• sustainability initiatives including creating/landscaping community organic gardens, irrigation canals, cistern and potable water system construction, compost latrine construction, smokeless stove construction and installation
• assisting farmers, fisherman, weavers, potters, health workers
• environmental work such as building and maintaining trails, tree-planting, trail erosion control
• organizing, supervising and tutoring local children in summer schools and day camps
• creating and executing large public murals
• visiting with and assisting elders
