Spanish

VISIONS Spanish immersion summer programs are the perfect fit for high school students interested in community service work, travel, and furthering their Spanish language skills. VISIONS teen volunteers and leaders live together as a group in local neighborhoods and work in in the heart of these Latin American communities among friends and neighbors who speak little to no English. Through rewarding service work and cultural immersion, students can practice Spanish conversational skills that are a great complement to classroom studies.

Programs

VISIONS has four Spanish immersion programs to choose from: Nicaragua, Peru, Ecuador & Galápagos, and the Dominican Republic. Each Latin American program location is unique—ranging from a neighborhood in the heart of a lively city to a small town at the base of the Andes Mountains. VISIONS Spanish volunteer programs feature masonry and adobe construction projects, development of water systems, and day camps for local children. Many students try different VISIONS Spanish immersion programs each summer to experience new cultures and further their language skills. This type of culturally rich teen volunteer travel program is designed to help create more conscious and compassionate global citizens.

Philosophy

While service is at the core of the summer experience, it’s in equal measure with cultural immersion and community-building. We explore local markets, practice language skills with new friends and neighbors, participate in artisan workshops, and enjoy dinner with local families. On weekends and after work hours, we experience cultural sites and travel adventures.

Language Prerequisites

For all of our extended length programs of more than 16 days, we generally require that participants have studied Spanish for at least two years, or had the equivalent language practice through life experience. There are no prerequisites for the shorter programs. Middle school and high school Spanish classes are acceptable.
